Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That
Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
