UN Ends Penalties on President of Syria Before White House Visit

United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to an American proposal ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his Washington trip next week.

He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that removed the previous leader in winter 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced global penalties while commanding the Islamist group HTS, which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. The US removed HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations this past July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and allied countries for assisting of Syria and its people."

Imminent Washington Talks

The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

Following their discussion, Trump said Sharaa had "a real shot at pulling it together".

Both presidents held discussions initially this past May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to the region.

Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country until he severed ties during 2016.

Previous US Visit

This week's diplomatic engagement will not be his initial visit to America during this period. During September, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan in almost 60 years.

Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
